The Color Orange - Pumpkins
various days in September and October 2024

Halloween is coming 'round again. Originating in Ireland and Scotland, it was
turnips and rutabagas that were carved. Pumpkins, being somewhat larger, offered
more opportunity for cutting and embellishing. Today it is no fuss, no muss, no fun

with completely artificial plastic jack o'lanterns. No creativity. Just pay cash.

The pumpkins carved into jack o'lanterns and those with which we cook
are not the same. Just think . . . pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup. and more.

Set pumpkins out, right on the street, as seasonal embellishments by a planter.

So many pumpkins! Pallets heaped high. Big ones. Little ones. Rounded. Flattened.
Shades of dark to pale orange. Yellow, white, mottled with dark green. Smooth. Warty.
The orange pumpkins are Cucurbita pepo, all others are probably Cucurbita maxima

Stores are filled with ginormous cartons filled with orange pumpkins.

Each year Linus hopefully awaits the arrival of the Great Pumpkin
to a pumpkin patch deemed most sincere and lacking in hypocrisy.

Autumn has come and leaves on some trees have turned from green to orange.
Actually, the beta-carotene color was there all along, disguised by chlorophyll.
What else is orange? Carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupes. And yes, pumpkins!

A safety vest is also orange: blaze orange, hunter orange. High visibility.

Small orange pumpkins, attractively paired with a pot of orange chrysanthemums.

A cart of potted chrysanthemums for sale at Wal-Mart. I was especially
intrigued by the wheels, fashioned from round display shelving units
with yellow tape for hubs and rims. And aluminum loaf pans as headlights.

A roadside stand with a shopping cart, filled with pumpkins.

Doubtless the ones at the bottom are most appealing . . .

There are small white "ghost" pumpkins. I've seen them embellished with magic marker. Not for me.

Colors of the seasons. Burgundy, scarlet, red, orange, yellow. Pumpkins. Indian corn.

And the other than green color of leaves on trees.
